Your church leadership has wisely invested in church insurance. But like all organizations, they would like to find a way to save money. At the same time, the leadership does not want to jeopardize the church property or people. So, how can you save on church insurance?
- Install and use a central station security system. Yes, it's a church and you would think people would respect it. But, people can break into churches when the buildings are unoccupied. So, talk with your insurance agent about what type of security system is best for you, then shop around for the best system for your church.
- Get automatic fire detection system with 24-hour monitoring. For some security companies, fire detection equipment can be part of your overall security system. Unlike the sprinkler heads in the building — which are supposed to help put out the fire — a monitoring system will alert the fire department at the first sign of a fire. That means firefighters could get on scene faster and possibly save more of the building.
- Keep valuables locked away when not in use — and don't keep that a secret. Let it be known that the valuable communion service is locked in a safe. There is no need to have people wondering what is left out in the open when no one is in the building. That doesn't mean you have to announce it. Just let key people know who will quietly spread the word. Frustrate a thief before they think about breaking in.
- Use lighting around the building. Yes, this will increase the electricity bills. But lighting around the building will also deter thieves. People are more likely to break into a dark building than a well-lit one. You can also install lighting inside the building that comes on randomly, as if someone is inside.
If you can't take care of all four of those items, choose which ones are the easiest and within your church's budget. Also remember that implementing these safety measures can lead to significant insurance premium savings.
