Home Safety Tips for Spring and Summer

Spring is here, and you know what that means… it’s time for spring cleaning and maintenance! Keeping your home safe and organized for the spring and summer starts with a deep clean and some regular safety maintenance during the months of March and April. Below, we’llNeighborhood outline some quick tips to get you started, including how to make sure your home insurance policy is covering what you need it to as well.

Top Spring Home Maintenance Tips

1. Ensure your roof is in good shape.

Spring can bring serious storms, the threat of which can extend into summer. One of the most common types of storm-related home damage is a broken or collapsed roof. To prevent this from happening, it's a good idea to make sure that your roof is in sturdy shape before storm season begins.

2. Keep tree limbs away from your home.

Likewise, during a storm, weak or broken tree limbs may cause problems. They can either fall onto your roof or house and cause damage or into your driveway, damaging vehicles or blocking garages and roadways. A good way to prevent tree limb damage is to cut away any limbs that look weak, too heavy, rotten, or dead. Especially do this to tree limbs that are near your home.

3. Plan for home protection during vacations.

During the summer, many families go on vacation and leave their homes for extended periods of time. If this is the case for your family, make sure that you are taking precautions to prevent burglaries, vandalism, and other outside threats while you are away. One good way to do this is to install a security system that links directly to an application on your phone. While you are away from your home, you will be able to monitor your property and see if there is any suspicious activity going on inside or around your house.

4. Reevaluate your home insurance policy.

Lastly, look at your home insurance policy and make sure that it covers everything you need it to. Too many homeowners are unaware of what their insurance does and does not cover. Make sure that you have a complete copy of your policy at home and know who to contact if you need to make a claim.

Being smart about your home insurance and taking the other steps listed above are some of the best things you can do to prevent a home disaster.
