A church is an important place for the community to gather and worship. Most people are very confident that they are safe in church.
But as with any other facility, churches have associated risks. Churches are hubs of activity; as such, there is always a chance that a congregant, staff member or a visitor might get injured in on church property.
In order to minimize this injury risk, churches should have personal injury liability insurance protections. By getting this coverage, churches can protect their financial safety. This insurance protection can also usually provide any compensation the injured party may need.
However, every responsible church should take steps to reduce personal injury risks on site, even if there is insurance coverage in tow. Most church bodies have safety standards in place to protect congregants. A church should always apply these standards to its individual space.
Consider these steps to ensure that everyone who comes into your church is safe from injury:
- Reduce fire risks when possible. Place lit candles away from flammable items. Many churches are now using electric candles to reduce the risk of flames. Make sure church members are responsibly trained in candle placement. Have a professional inspect the electrical wiring, heating systems and other fire-prone machinery.
- Mark stairwells, steps and other potential fall risks. Keep warning signs like wet floor signs on hand.
- Keep security systems — such as locks, alarms and smoke detectors — in good working order.
- Ensure that handrails are secure. Check carpets to make sure they are smooth. Check flooring for cracks or breaks.
- Make sure that seating areas are secure and don't pose a risk breaking. If members use an altar, make sure this area is also safe.
- Mark fragile items, such as glass containers and heavy metals. Make sure people know not to touch them.
- If you have a balcony, get it inspected regularly. Have interior structures — such as foundations, staircases and walkways — checked annually.
- If you have a kitchen, make sure appliances function properly. A malfunctioning item could injure a parishioner. Ensure that there are proper use instructions for these items in plain sight.
- Make sure all areas are properly lighted.
- Be aware of any potential risks in parking lot. There should be clear paths to and from entrances. Also, close off areas that may have safety risks.
- If you have recreational equipment, make sure it works properly.
- Only professionals should handle church maintenance, inspections and construction.
Always know which areas are dangerous for church members and staff. In the event an unfortunate accident occurs, personal injury liability insurance can provide financial protection.
